Where do you leave your kid while you work?
    Dearest Seattle-

I am moving shortly, and unfortunately have to change my son's daycare.

He's currently in a full day Headstart class, which I'd really like to continue with, but that doesn't seem to be an option after I move. He's not really "special needs", but does kind of need some extra attention. He has a speech delay, and as a result his social skills are a little behind others of his age. Headstart has been AMAZING for him, so that or something similar would really be ideal. I'll settle for an in-home daycare if I have to, but would strongly prefer something more like a preschool. Also need some place that takes state child care subsidy payments.

I'm moving from White Center to Lakecity/Shoreline, and work in Ballard. I work Mon-Fri 8a-5p. He's almost 4.

I checked the memories back to '06, and this isn't really the sort of thing you Google.

    Thanks!

SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS HAVE LEGS!
My 1970's Marvel Superhero obsession continues in this new piece finished today of Japanese hero Sunfire-

The coloring was done in photoshop, the fire effect done in Corel Painter and the background is some picture of Tokyo stolen somewhere from the net and tweeked in photoshop, which is really a cheap lazymans way of doing backgrounds, but what the hell. i ain't got lots o' time plus it's one damn cool shot of Tokyo.
Sunfire has always been a fave of mine. He almost was a member of X-Men, but left cuz he's a jerk. He still pops up once in awhile in the book, which is always a thrill for me. Course, Marvel never knows what to do with such a cool character like him, so he's gone thru the ringer. He's even had his legs lopped off once. Somehow he got them back.
I just dig the whole design of the outfit and that strange red creature from the black lagoon- like mask of his, which doesn't make any sense in regards to his solar super powers, but it's just so bizarre. Marvel has gone and redesigned the outfit over the years, but I will always prefer this one, created by early Marvel artist Don Heck. With the current craze for Japanese super heroes, video game characters and J-Rock fans, Marvel has a character they really should be using toward that demograpic, but instead blow all their creative energies trying to figure out the millionth way to shove Wolverine into every comic book they publish.
Oh well, I'm too broke for yet another comic book series to follow.
More of my fave 70's comic characters to come!

    Scraps for art projects
Where is the best place to get free/cheap scraps of materials such as wires, tech-y things, colorful objects, cloth, textures, etc.?
This will be glued to paper, so I need small scraps, or things that can be destroyed further to make smaller, somewhat glue-able things.
The more interesting textures the better, but anything goes.
    thanks.

The student athletes on the Seattle U swim team are offering private lessons to anyone who wants to learn to swim or improve their existing swimming skills.

Each class costs $20 for up to three people, and all proceeds benefit the swim team's travel and training budget. Coach Kat Cuevas tells me they've taught people from ages 14 months up to middle age.

Classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays between 3:30 and 5:30pm at Seattle U's Connolly Center at 14th & Cherry. To sign up or get more info, contact Kat Cuevas at cuevask@seattleu.edu

    Assemblage 23 @ El Corazon
Tom Shear is kicking off A23's Compass tour on March 29th at El Corazon. None of my friends are going, so I was wondering if anyone else was planning to go and see it. And whether or not you wanna go together.

I know it's a bit early but can never be too early. ;)

Need to find a beautifully decorated church...
I am working on a photography project for a class and need recommendations for churches that are magnificent (in or out)... I'm thinking massive stained glass windows, elaborate worship areas, paintings, statues, etc.  Does not have to be a Christian church... any place of worship.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey y'all.

I have a 2002 Jetta wagon that isn't in drivable condition. Do any of you wonderful snarkers have any tips or experience junking/scrapping a car for money?

Does this exist? Am I crazy? I just don't have the time or money to fix 'er up. (Cosmetic damage)

If you do, by all means, halp.

If you don't, by all means: snark.

    Out of Florida bound

For the record, I have just rediscovered for the first time in many many years that I do not like driving through the mountains at night. What the fuck is with people driving like a bunch of brainless Nascar retards in them too???!!!! Frustrating, so I come to lj to vent so I don't freak out haha. If anyone even reads this thing anymore thank for reading my whines and bitches. I won't get into exactly where I'm headed on the interwebz cause people lurk and they can fuck off. So if you wanna know, call or text me. Trip has been good so far with the exception of a few minor setbacks this morning, but I think that had more to do with the fact that my buddy and I never get up before noon and we left at the freakin crack ass of dawn more than anything else haha. We made it through the mountains and it is freezin! Cracked the windows for a minute to get some fresh air and I look hilarious all snuggled up. I'm in a KISS snuggie and a cheetah print fleece hoodie. Redonk. Well I think I'm gonna take a nap now that I can relax since we are out of the scary place! Xoxo

I'm very antsy and need to type
I got a package from Sephora a short while ago (gift card for Christmas) but I think my rabbits appreciate the package more than I did. I was pretty damn excited, but they are having a blast because I gave them all the packing tissue from the box. I haven't heard the rip-rip-riiiiiipping stop since.

I am LOVING, capital-letter-style, bareMinerals Matte. I'm not exactly a girly girl, but this makeup makes me very happy. I also love the fact that this company distinguishes between "ghostly pale" and "general North/Western European-heritage pale ruddy skin". I have to wear the palest shade of most other brands, which tends to wash me out or be TOO pink, because the second-palest shade always has too much gold/brown to it and I end up looking like a Jersey Shore wannabe. PALE AND PINK != GOTHERRIFIC, GOT IT? I also got the hydrating mineral veil, instead of the original, and I will see how the two compare.

I'm not excited about the fact that one of the free samples -- a men's cologne that I didn't order and am not sure what to do with -- was leaking and now I reek of it. The bad memories this inspires are making me want to go scrub myself to death.

I would like to applaud today's UPS delivery driver, as he is the first to have ever bothered to ring the effing doorbell. Hunting down packages at the distribution center because I didn't hear a delivery man barely tap on my door is a pain in my ass and I'm glad I didn't have to do it this time.

    Winter quarter classes
After having the worst professor of my life during fall quarter, things are looking better for winter. To start with, winter is hibernation season, so I'm taking evening courses so I can sleep in. I decided to take another woodshop class and two of the graduate level electives from the MES program. The problem with taking the graduate level courses, is that you can't register as an undergrad till the first day of class, so I had to register for other classes with the hope that there would be open spots. I made it into both of them! The teachers seem great so far.

Machiya I: The Traditional Japanese House - Daryl is a great teacher that I've had before. He really knows his stuff

Conservation and Restoration Biology - The prof is the lead scientist for the habitat science group at the DFW.

Global & Regional Climate Change - The prof is a hydrologist with the department of ecology, so it should be interesting to look at the issues from his perspective.

    Softened language semantics
Just because someone wasn't beaten to death, shot, carved up, etc. does NOT mean that they died from natural causes of any kind. It is absolutely ridiculous to hear/read this phrase with regards to someone dying very young of no outwardly obvious foul play. If Brittany Murphy died of a heart attack, that is still not a natural cause for a 32-year-old woman.

Today I'm reading reports that one of the Johnson & Johnson heirs died at 30 and it's again being touted as "natural causes". Excuse me, but this woman was known to have done a lot of drugs, she was Type 1 diabetic and displayed tons of outward psychologically disturbing behavior. I had no idea who this person was, but a quick Google search will show anyone both reputed and tabloid sources saying all of this ad nauseum. This means that while her death is at a shockingly young age, it's really not all that surprising.

There's obviously nothing natural about either of these situations I've mentioned and I'm sick of PR personnel dumbing things down like this. A drug overdose is not a natural cause, damage ravaged on the body due to a combination of drugs and diabetic non-compliance (not adhering to strict use of diet and insulin) is not natural, even deprivation of proper care of one's body due to psychological deficits is still not natural. This phrase is used deceivingly as a blanket term and I don't like it.

What's funny is that both of these autopsies are now waiting for the full toxicology screening results, but the deaths have already been referred to as having been from NATURAL CAUSES. I'm sorry, but I think I'd prefer to label a situation once all the facts are in. What if either of these women had been poisoned? What if either had died from shock due to toxin exposure?

I could bitch about semantics all day, but ultimately I think it's a disrespect to the person who has died to soften the details of their death with words that don't really describe the situation at hand. Young women dying, even if by their own unintended destruction, is highly unnatural in general and I find that the verbal tip-toeing takes something away from the seriousness of the matter.

    2010 Goals
I waited a few days before posting this because I've been thinking a lot about what I want to accomplish this year. The end of 2009 was good to me and to my family: I have a steady job, a beautiful wife and daughter, we bought a house, got a dog, finances are shaping up nicely, etc. I've put a fair share of work into building up the life that I have. So this year, rather than working towards any big life-altering goals, I want to take the time to sit back and enjoy the things that I have.

    * Continue biking to work. I have not been this active since I was hooked on DDR my last years of high school and beginnings of college, and I feel darn good about it. Eventually I'd like to throw in weight lifting or some pull-ups to my routine - it has not stuck for me thus far - but I feel good doing more regular exercise than 60% of the population as is.

    * Get our finances solidified. Now that we're homeowners and have paid off a couple loans, our finances are improved drastically - but still in a state of working things out to perfection. I'd like things nailed down so that our budget is clear and properly sized, and our savings grows. This will take only time and experimentation.

    * Train the dog. I've been pretty grumpy about Google's antics and lack of housetraining until recently, but lately we've put in effort to control his behavior very tightly. It's been a lot better for both of us... he gets more treats and praise, while our carpets are staying clean. He's turning out to be the puppy I had hoped for after all : )

    * Do some work on the house. I find home renovation therapeutic, as major projects that enhance and change my everyday surroundings. We have specific plans to tear down all the wallpaper and repaint walls, and pull up carpet in two rooms to re-do them in laminate or hardwood. Plus there are flowerbeds to dig, a garage to clean, and a mowing schedule to keep on top of.

    * Take more pictures! I broke a personal record last year with the number of photos I shot. This year, I want to do even more! I plan to continue working through 100 snapshots, hopefully finishing this year, and treat myself to a Nikon DSLR when it's done. Part of this goal is going to help me get over my insecurity taking pictures of other people besides Anya: I'll take the camera with me to more places, and get more pictures of friends and family. Who knows, I may even take some of myself this year...

    * Be more active socially. I'm already starting up regular game nights, and I want to initiate a Conway photo club. I'd like to get out of the house more than just for work. I'd like to explore Conway a bit more, and try some of the local hiking trails. I want date nights. I want to fill this year with memories.

That pretty much wraps it up, I think. As for my LJ, I'll probably keep using it in mostly the same way - documenting the things in my life that I think are worth sharing or doing.
